Responsibilities of Parish Council Members


“Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to make your calling and election sure, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall.” ( II Peter 1:10)


General Expectations

1) Support the mission, purposes, goals, policies and programs, while fully aware of the parish’s strengths and needs


2) Suggest possible nominees to the parish council who are men and women of achievement and who can make meaningful contributions to the progress of the parish


3) Serve actively on committees as requested by the parish council chairperson


4) Provide constructive and useful input and feedback to the chair and to the priest on the performance of staff members


5) Whenever possible attend services, activities and events of the parish


Meetings

1) Prepare for and participate in all parish council and committee meetings


2) Ask timely and substantive questions at parish council and committee meetings consistent with personal conscience and convictions, while supporting the majority decisions on issues decided by the parish council


3) Maintain confidentiality of the parish council’s sensitive information and speak for the parish council or the parish only when authorized to do so


4) Suggest agenda items periodically for parish council and committee meetings to ensure that significant policy-related matters are addressed


Meetings

1) Serve the best interests of the parish as a whole rather than any special interest group or constituency


2) Avoid even the appearance of a conflict of interest that might embarrass the parish council or the parish and disclose any possible conflicts to the parish council in a timely fashion


3) Never accept (or offer) favors or gifts from (or to) anyone who does business with the parish


Fundraising

1) Make a personally sacrificial annual gift to the parish according to personal means; make a personally meaning capital gift if the parish is undertaking a building or renovations campaign; if appropriate, consider remembering the parish in estate plans and always remember the leadership role the parish council must play in these matters


2) Assist the parish by implementing fundraising strategies through personal influence with others


3) Participate actively in all parish fund raising special events, programs and activities as the schedule allows
